GPL Podcast #42

February 28th, 2007-10:09 pm by sub2change

Jenna and I invited Assemblyman Bill Kramer onto the podcast for an encore performance. I decided to subject him to a little freshman hazing.

We talked with the Assemblyman about his first impressions, taxes, Republican resolve (or lack there of), and Jim Doyle’s budget speech. Jenna and I also celebrate our anniversary podcast, one month late.

Listen here. (30 minutes)

Al Gore’s Abuse of Power

February 28th, 2007-6:20 pm by sub2change

Rogier van Bakel writes a very thoughtful blog on the recent think tank study, which stated that Al Gore’s personal carbon footprint is 20 times the average American’s. The response of the Gore machine to this study is particularly interesting.

“What Mr. Gore has asked is that every family calculate their carbon footprint and try to reduce it as much as possible. Once they have done so, he then advocates that they purchase offsets, as the Gores do, to bring their footprint down to zero.”

Van Bakel rightly points out that this is an amusing tactic. The concept of a “carbon footprint” is relatively new. Now we’re being told that in the Church of Global Warming the sinners can redeem themselves by purchasing credits against their transgressions.

Well, that’s “An Awfully Convenient Loophole” (I call movie rights on that one). How often have we been told that the science behind global climate change is not exact? Yet, somehow we understand it enough to say that one tree equals X number of hair driers? If that’s really the case, shouldn’t we be able to calculate the environmental impact of all man kind?

Do you understand why it’s dangerous to the environmental movement to quantify global warming? If they did, it means that we could actually calculate how much change is actually necessary. We’d have an attainable (or not) goal of how many trees to plant and megawatts to convert to nuclear energy. Then, they’d all have to shut up because we’ve solved the problem.

The Next Y2K?

February 27th, 2007-5:47 pm by sub2change

New rules for Daylight Saving time take effect this year. When these rules were first proposed I thought that it was a nightmare in the making. Somewhere, in somebody’s comment section, I even wrote it down.

Today, the state legislature is rushing to prove my point. At the very least, changing DST is a big waste of time and money.

It’ll be interesting to see what other impacts this change has. There are some unpatchable systems out there that may cause some trouble for some poor schmuck. Don’t forget to download your software updates before March 10th, and watch the news for a few more stories like the one about the problem with the F-22 Raptor.

With any luck, Kelly will be in labor when the blackout hits.

Not in My Obituary

February 26th, 2007-10:39 pm by sub2change

I caught a news blurb about a cop or fire fighter that recently passed away in the line of duty.  What caught my attention about it was the part where they talked about his hobbies. They briefly mentioned that he liked fishing or something, then said he loved working with computers.

The poor schmuck! He was probably the only competent computer user in the family, constantly forced to fix everyone else’s machines.  Of course, everybody assumed that he must love computers because he was so good with them, right?

Dear reader, if you read in my obituary “loves computers” please find the jerk who wrote that and jab them in the eye.

Could Be Another Long Night

February 26th, 2007-10:10 pm by sub2change

We’re probably headed to the hospital again to get the baby checked out. Kelly says he hasn’t been moving much lately, so her doctor said to lie on her left side for an hour and count kicks.

She hasn’t felt enough of them, so we’re probably going to have to go and get it checked out. If you don’t hear back from me, I’ve recruited Sean Hackbarth (The American Mind) to blog anything I send from the hospital. You may want to check over there.

Update: Everything’s ok. I hope the kid is this peaceful after the birth.

Britney Spears Needs Batting Practice

February 23rd, 2007-10:59 pm by sub2change

I’m really sorry to have to mention Britney Spears on this blog again, but I just can’t withold comment on this photo of her attacking the Paparazzi.

chokeup.jpg

Her stance is all wrong and she’s gripping that umbrella way too high. It looks like she’s about to commit hara-kiri with that umbrella.
