We're Not Out of the Woods Yet

The last report that I read said the British have arrested nineteen suspects in this latest al-Qaida plot. I want to be on record as the one who predicted that someone is missing.

When early reports on 9/11 said there were four hijacked planes and nineteen suspects, something in the back of my mind said "19 / 4 = an non-whole number."

As it turns out, my instinct was right. One of the would-be terrorists called in sick to work that day. I still think it's humorous that a suicide bomber couldn't suck it up for a little stomach flu. Where's the dedication to the cause? It's not like you ever have to show your face in public again if you do have an embarrassing episode.

Osama Bin Laden was an engineer. Al-Qaida is a structured organization. While one of the major goals of these people is to be unpredictable, I think that we can count on a certain level of design. I'm sure I can't say this without offending someone, but Osama thinks like an engineer. This organization has some patterns that we can use to our advantage.

I think the "evenly divisible by" rule is a good one to use when we step back to ask ourselves whether we've busted an entire terrorist cell. Also, in this case I would not stop searching or ease up on security until we bust a similar cell within the United States. It's here. If we don't find it it's because Russ Feingold isn't allowing us to wire tap hard enough.

You don't even have to understand much about the organization to see this pattern, do you?

One of Al-Qaida's weeknesses is its structure. They may not micromanage, but there's still a chain of command to exploit. In some ways they follow a lot of the same guidelines as a business or the military.

The more of these SOBs we catch, the easier it will be to get the rest. Throw 'em all in Gitmo and poke 'em with sticks until they sing like canaries. No farting around.
