I Quit
My last cigarette was in June. Except for the fact that it was a good escape, I don't miss it much. Smoking is a pain in the butt.
I can't really give any advice on how to quit, because I just did it: cold turkey. Well, almost cold turkey. I did try the gum once, and I hated it. The only thing that made it easy is that I quit during a time when smoking was difficult for me anyway.
I had developed a nasty flu bug and I wasn't really interested in eating, much less smoking. One morning I went out for a break and the cigarette tasted like varnish. I tossed it out and tried another, only to get the same result. I thought something must've gotten on them, until I tasted my morning coffee. You guessed it: liquid varnish.
I don't know if my senses were off because I was sick, or whether this had anything to do with my home remodeling projects. Whatever the case, eating, drinking, and smoking were unpleasant for at least two days. After two days without smoking, I figured I may as well try giving it up.
FYI: Lisa has some commentary on how anti-smoking advocates are hurting non-smokers.

1 Amendments:
What sucks is that insurance offers incentives to people to quit smoking. What about those of us that never smoked....
Against your best advice, I'm thinking I'm going take up smoking just so I can quit, give out advice to never start smoking to kids, and collect the $50 from my health insurance company...
